Can You Grow Peyote In The UK?

the sacred peyote cactus?

Gardeners and botanists alike are fascinated by the interesting species that make up the
vast and diverse world of cactus. A popular species among these is the Lophophora genus (AKA Peyote), which has a long history of spiritual and therapeutic use among native communities in Mexico and the southwest of the United States.

So, what about the inquisitive cactus fan over in the UK who wants to give cultivating this
mysterious plant a shot? Or is looking to purchase a Peyote seedling, for the pleasure of nurturing it into a mature plant?

Contrary to popular belief, growing peyote cactus for ornamental purposes is permitted in
the UK. Extraction of it hallucinogenic component (known as mescaline) is illegal and categorised as a Class A substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1971. Nonetheless, the growing of the cactus itself is not prohibited by law. This plant is highly sought after and rarely available in the UK. 

 

It is cherished amongst specialised cactus collectors, as these can live many decades and are often a family heirloom that is passed down from generation to generation.
