A distinctive cluster of Lophophora koehresii, featuring several compact, button-like heads growing closely together. This species is known for its smooth, spineless form, muted blue-green to olive-green colouring, and gently defined ribs that give mature plants their characteristic rounded appearance.
Lophophora koehresii is native to San Luis Potosí, Mexico, particularly the drier eastern and southeastern parts of the state, where it occurs in arid habitats on mineral-rich soils. It was formally described as a separate species in the 1990s and is named after German cactus specialist and seed collector Gerhard Köhres.
Compared with some other members of the genus, L. koehresii often develops relatively flat, subtly ribbed bodies with small woolly areoles concentrated toward the centre. Mature specimens can produce delicate flowers, typically pale pink to whitish with darker pink or brownish mid-stripes, followed by elongated fruits.
This specimen is especially appealing for its multi-headed clustered form, giving it considerably more character than a typical solitary plant. The golf ball shown in the photograph provides a useful indication of scale.
