Copiapoa mollicula is a rare and compact species from the coastal deserts of northern Chile, prized for its distinctive appearance and slow-growing nature. It forms small, rounded stems that cluster over time, each crowned with neat rows of fine black spines. The deep grey-green to almost bluish body and woolly crown give this cactus a unique, textured look, making it a favourite among collectors of South American species.
In summer, mature plants may produce pale yellow flowers that contrast beautifully with the darker body, adding to its ornamental appeal. Although flowering is more common in older specimens, even younger plants stand out for their sculptural form and attractive spination.
Best suited to containers in the UK, Copiapoa mollicula thrives in a gritty, free-draining cactus compost with plenty of light and minimal watering. Like many Copiapoa, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires very little attention beyond keeping it warm and dry through the winter months.
This species is an excellent choice for collectors seeking a slow-growing, long-lived cactus with strong architectural character. Its small size and clumping habit also make it well suited for windowsills, conservatories, and greenhouse collections (heated in winter).
Caution: Toxic if eaten.
