Adenium obesum, commonly known as the Desert Rose, is a beautiful succulent prized for its swollen caudex, sculptural branching and spectacular displays of trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, it combines the character of a caudiciform succulent with the appearance of a miniature flowering tree.
These are seed-grown plants, meaning each seedling is genetically unique and will gradually develop its own individual caudex shape, branching structure and flowering characteristics. Unlike plants produced from cuttings, seedlings naturally form a swollen basal caudex from an early age, which becomes increasingly pronounced and characterful as the plant matures.
With plenty of warmth, bright light and an appropriate free-draining growing medium, Adenium obesum can develop surprisingly quickly during the warmer months. As the caudex thickens and the branches mature, plants can be trained and shaped over time, making them particularly popular with collectors of caudiciforms and succulent bonsai.
Flower colour and form can vary between seed-grown individuals unless produced from controlled parentage, making part of the appeal watching each seedling mature into a completely individual specimen. A rewarding and attractive plant for anyone looking to grow a Desert Rose from its juvenile stages and watch its characteristic caudex develop over the years.
