A rare and highly sought-after form of Ariocarpus fissuratus var. lloydii is particularly prized by collectors for its distinctive broad, thick and rounded tubercles. Compared with the more typical A. fissuratus, lloydii develops a heavier, more robust appearance, eventually forming an impressive low-growing rosette with the unusual stone-like character for which Ariocarpus are so highly regarded.
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert region of northern Mexico, Ariocarpus fissuratus var. lloydii is a specialist collector's cactus and is relatively uncommon in cultivation, particularly as larger established specimens. Its naturally extremely slow rate of growth means plants can take many years to develop significant size, adding considerably to the appeal of well-established examples.
This specimen has been permanently grafted onto Trichocereus pachanoi rootstock, providing a vigorous and dependable root system while dramatically accelerating the development of the otherwise exceptionally slow-growing Ariocarpus. The substantial rootstock provides an excellent foundation for growing the scion into a much larger and more impressive specimen over time.
The lloydii scion is established and actively developing, with fresh growth forming its characteristic thick, fleshy tubercles. As it matures, these should become increasingly pronounced and develop the rugged, sculptural appearance characteristic of the variety. A particularly interesting specimen for serious cactus and Ariocarpus collectors, combining an uncommon and desirable variety with the vigour of established T. pachanoi rootstock.
