Harrisia jusbertii, often referred to as the “Queen of the Night” due to its large, fragrant nocturnal blooms, is a highly desirable cactus, especially as a strong, seed-grown plant. This offering is for a healthy seedling approximately 12–15 cm in height, grown from seed rather than a cutting, meaning it has developed a natural, well-formed root system from the start. This results in a more stable, resilient plant with excellent long-term potential, making it especially valuable for both collectors and growers.

Widely regarded as one of the best grafting rootstocks available, Harrisia jusbertii is prized for its exceptional compatibility with a broad range of cacti, including slower-growing and more sensitive species. Its growth is vigorous yet controlled, providing consistent support to grafted plants without forcing overly rapid or unnatural development. Unlike more aggressive stocks, it allows grafted plants to grow more naturally while still thriving, which is one of the reasons it is so highly valued.

Beyond its use as a rootstock, Harrisia jusbertii is an attractive and interesting species in its own right. It forms upright, columnar stems with a deep green colour, typically with a simple structure and minimal branching, sometimes requiring support as it grows taller. The stems feature a neat arrangement of short spines along defined ribs, giving it a clean and architectural appearance.

One of its most fascinating features is its ability to produce large, strongly scented white flowers that open at night, often reaching impressive sizes and appearing repeatedly through the warmer months. These blooms are a defining characteristic of the plant and contribute to its well-known nickname. In cultivation, fruiting is uncommon, as many plants are self-sterile and share similar genetics.

There is also some botanical intrigue surrounding Harrisia jusbertii, as it is sometimes considered to be of hybrid origin, possibly involving species from both the Harrisia and Echinopsis groups. This may explain its unique combination of vigour, adaptability, and outstanding performance as a grafting stock.

Hardy, reliable, and easy to grow, Harrisia jusbertii is an excellent choice whether you are looking for a premium grafting base or an unusual cactus with real character. Seed-grown examples of this size are particularly desirable and ready to establish quickly in their new home.
